Appearance:
Standing at 6’2” Mathiu is a rather tall fellow but lacks any sort of physical strength. Even though he is on the wrong side of thirty, he is still far too young to look as weary and haggard as he does. Lines of worry and regret cross his once-handsome face and his dark eyes hold a profound sadness that strikes through to his soul. His hair is a rich auburn color, more brown than red, and rather unkempt. Convenience rather than fashion dictates its style—long the back and hastily combed out of his face. His clothing is generally simple—khaki colored pants with a matching jacket and boots to his knees. But no matter what attire he dons, he always can be seen wearing a crimson scarf around his neck.
Personality:
Mathiu is a reserved fellow and keeps most of his life private. He keeps a deliberate distance from his family, lest they attempt to drag him back into the life he walked away from. Very few people are close to him, and he prefers to keep it that way. He will take the occasional drink with old friends but generally does not actively seek socialization. Oddly enough, he enjoys the company of children and spent many years educating them.
Abilities/Strengths:
Mathiu was very gifted in the craft of strategy and orchestrating wars for the Scarlet Moon Empire until he left their army. He is also a capable doctor and teacher and worked in both fields following his departure from the Imperial Army. He also draws rather well, but it is highly unlikely that anyone would ever see his artwork.
Weaknesses:
Mathiu’s greatest weakness is his inability to forgive himself for incidents in his past. Also, in a physical fight he would be useless. And, like other members of the Silverberg family, Mathiu has problems with alcohol.
History:
Mathiu is the eldest child of Johnathan and Olivia Silverberg and the brother of Odessa. As members of the Imperial Nobility, his parents were well connected in the Scarlet Moon Empire, and his father worked as a military advisor to Emperor Barbarossa. Mathiu was rather spoiled, but his father did not force him into learning the family craft. Rather, Johnathan worked hard to protect his family from the life he had been forced to accept and never made mention of strategy in the house.
In his early teens, Mathiu began to study medicine under a private tutor. His sister, ten years his junior, constantly irritated him, but his father insisted he show her kindness. Shortly after Mathiu’s fifteenth birthday, Johnathan and Olivia were murdered by enemies of Emperor Barbarossa. He and Odessa were ripped from their life in Gregminster and sent to live with his father’s younger brother, Leon.
Leon was not a man who knew how to talk to children, much less raise them. He was only twelve years older than Mathiu and had no patience for the kids, especially kids in mourning. Many nights the children were left to their own devices while their uncle assumed Johnathan’s place at the Emperor’s side as chief military strategist.
Mathiu first became fascinated with learning military strategy when he realized he could use it for revenge against his murdered parents. When he told Leon that he wanted to pursue the family craft, Leon sent him to Sodelt Military Academy in Harmonia. Mathiu studied diligently and following his graduation, apprenticed under Leon. During this time, Mathiu earned himself quite the reputation for his tactics and he also developed a bit of an ego. His arrogance rivaled his uncle’s and together the two of them brought Emperor Barbarossa many victories. Before he was twenty-three years old, Mathiu became vice-strategist to the Emperor during the Succession Wars. While quite gifted with strategy and manipulation, he suffered defeat only at the hands of his own conscience.
Two years after the Succession Wars, a neighboring country threatened to attack Scarlet Moon. Still suffering from the bloodshed of the civil strife, the country could not withstand another war. Leon concocted a plan to build morale back by blaming an unprecedented attack on the enemy. Mathiu brought an elite group of troops to a small village named Kalekka and disguised them as enemy soldiers. On Leon’s order, they massacred everyone. As word spread that the enemies decimated a village, morale in the Empire grew, and the true enemy was pushed back easily.
Shaken to the core by this disgusting and bloody ploy, Mathiu fought with Leon, resigned from the Imperial Army and then he disappeared. For years he wandered the world, mostly the Grasslands, and then eventually settled in a village called Seika where he opened a private school and served as town doctor.
Shortly thereafter, Odessa reappeared in his life, begging him to help her with her cause to overthrow the Emperor as he had become a corrupt and misguided leader. After Kalekka, Mathiu had vowed never to venture onto a battlefield again as he could not justify killing people—friend or foe. Thus he refused her each and every time she wrote or visited him. He cared greatly for Odessa and kept trying to talk her out of starting a war, but it was futile. While he believed in pacifism, she believed it was their duty to ensure the survival of the people since the Emperor had given up on his lowest subjects.
No matter how many times she came to him, no matter what excuses she made, no matter how many times she called him a coward, he never agreed to help her. It wasn’t under Odessa was murdered by the Imperial Army that he agreed to help the Liberation Army by serving as chief strategist to Tir McDohl.
The Liberation War went on for three years. Towards the end of the war, Mathiu was mortally wounded during the attack on The Floating Fortress. Sanchez, one of the Liberation Army’s original members, showed his true colors as a traitor. In an attempt to prevent Sanchez from murdering Tir McDohl, Mathiu struggled with him and was stabbed. He managed to finish the war and remove the Emperor from power. As he heard the cries of victory from the streets in Gregminster, he closed his eyes…and awoke in a desolite world.
